Education leaders representing Berks County’s 18 public school districts, two career and technology centers, and the Berks County Intermediate Unit have paratnered to create the Berks County Equity Committee (BCEC). The purpose of the committee is to address a continued commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion within our Berks County school communities.

The first meeting of the BCEC was held virtually on Tuesday, October 6, 2020. The Committee is co-chaired by Dr. Jill Hackman and Reading School District Superintendent Dr. Khalid Mumin.

During the first meeting, the committee reviewed goals, roles, responsibilities, and resources while setting the stage for the work ahead. Dr. Mumin shared the three primary tasks involved in leading for equity:

  • Igniting people with a sense of urgency and passion for the work of systematic equity.
  • Inspiring them with a vision of the possible. We can do this!
  • Supporting and sustaining them in the effort.

Committee members will act as a resource and point-of-contact for equity matters and communication regarding meetings and the committee’s efforts within their school communities.

The committee will meet quarterly; the next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, December 8.
