Boy Scout and ECYEH Donation Drive Supports Homeless Students in Berks County

Homelessness is a growing problem in Berks County, with over 1,652 students experiencing homelessness. These students often face significant challenges, including limited access to necessities like hygiene supplies. However, one tenth grade Fleetwood Area High School student and Boy Scout, Samuel Heebner, of Troop 183, is partnering with the Berks County Intermediate Unit (BCIU) Education for Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness (ECYEH) Program to help combat this problem.

Samuel’s Eagle Scout project involves collecting hygiene supplies that will be provided to local school districts to support students experiencing homelessness. The donated items include essential items like shampoo, conditioner, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, and feminine hygiene products, among others.

The BCIU fully supported and helped to facilitate Samuel’s project, recognizing the importance of addressing the needs of students that are experiencing homelessness.

Donation boxes were set up at three BCIU locations: the BCIU Main Office, the BCIU Learning Center at Lower Alsace, and the BCIU Education Centre. Over 2,300 hygiene supplies were collected!

The donation drive was an excellent opportunity for community members to support students experiencing homelessness in Berks County. Even small donations can make a big difference in the lives and overall well-being of these students. With the support of generous donors, Samuel and the ECYEH program can continue their vital work, helping to improve the lives of students throughout the region.

The ECYEH Program and Samuel Heebner are making a meaningful difference in the lives of Berks County students experiencing homelessness. Thank you to Samuel for his work and dedication and to those who supported this worthy cause!
