On Tuesday, August 20, more than 1,200 employees gathered at Muhlenberg High School for the annual Start of the Year / State of the Unit event. This year’s theme was “Serve. Share. Support.”

The event brings together all BCIU employees in anticipation of the upcoming school year and provides organizational updates, celebrates years of service for employees, kicks off the annual United Way campaign, reviews the BCIU’s mission and priorities, and sets the stage for another successful school year.

Keynote speaker Mr. Adam Blank delivered a powerful message about the importance of intermediate units to the student population. With his presentation, “It’s About Me. It’s About You. The Importance of an IU!” Adam shared his own experience, relating how the services provided by his home Intermediate Unit supported him throughout his school age years. Adam was born with albinism which caused vision problems. He also suffers from speech issues and is on the autism spectrum. His presentation touched the audience, reminding everyone of the important work that the BCIU and all intermediate units are doing for students.

Before the keynote speech, the audience was treated to an emotional presentation from Ms. Christine Folk, Executive Director of Mary’s Shelter. Showcasing the impact of United Way contributions, Ms. Folk related personal stories about the pregnancy, parenting, and youth homelessness services that have made a difference in the lives of Berks County students.

Also participating in the event were the students of the Muhlenberg Air Force JROTC who presented the colors and led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The BCIU thanks everyone who helped to make the event a success and set the tone for our 2019-2020 school year.
