The first Committee on Legislative Action (COLA) meeting of the new school year was held on Wednesday, October 3, at the BCIU Main Office. COLA members heard updates on the legislative priorities and advocacy efforts of the Pennsylvania School Boards’ Association (PSBA) from Mr. Nathan Mains, PSBA CEO, and Mr. John Callahan, PSBA Chief Advocacy Officer. Of special interest was the information provided on the status of school safety initiatives and the proposed changes to graduation requirements.
In addition, COLA Chair Dr. Robert Pleis reviewed COLA efforts from 2017-2018 and participants determined priorities for 2018-2019, as follows:
• School Safety and Mental Health
• Charter and Cyber / Charter Schools
• Property Tax Reassessment
• Teacher Shortage / Certification
The next meeting of the COLA group will be held on Thursday, December 6, 2018. Dr. Mark DiRocco, Executive Director of the PA Association of School Administrators, will attend to provide updates on legislation and advocacy efforts on behalf of our schools.
