Students kayaking in the water next to a small dock on a sunny day.

On Friday, May 29, 2026, thirteen students from multiple school districts, along with one cyber charter student, participated in the BCIU’s inaugural Blue Marsh Social for students who are blind or visually impaired.

The day began at the Lakeview Pavilion, where students enjoyed a light breakfast and connected with peers before setting out to explore the Eyes of the Eagle Sensory Trail & Garden. This thoughtfully designed outdoor trail features a crushed-stone path and rope guideline, enabling individuals with visual or physical impairments to navigate safely and independently. Along the route, interactive stations encouraged students to engage their senses while deepening their environmental awareness. The group also visited the Sensory Garden, maintained by the Berks County Master Gardener Program.

Following the trail walk, students, families, staff, and community partners, including representatives from the Bureau of Blind & Visual Services (BBVS) and the Vision Resource Center of Berks County, headed to the lake for a hands-on kayaking activity. Volunteers from Team River Runner – Susquehanna Valley/Kids Are Outta Sight (KAOS) provided instruction, encouragement, and support throughout the experience.

Team River Runner’s therapeutic paddling programs promote physical activity, social connection, and overall well-being for individuals with disabilities. After a thorough safety briefing, students spent approximately 45 minutes kayaking. For many, it was their first time on the water, making it a memorable highlight of the day.

“This was a great time. I just wish we had more time on the lake to enjoy the beautiful weather and experience,” shared Lukas McGonigal, a student from the Hamburg Area School District.

The event concluded back at the Lakeview Pavilion with lunch, music, games, and continued socialization, reinforcing the day’s focus on connection, recreation, and community.

Special thanks are extended to BCIU Recreation and Leisure co-chairs Michelle Whitehouse and Kendall Berger for their leadership in organizing the event, as well as to the many staff members, volunteers, and community partners whose collaboration made the day possible.
