The Berks County Intermediate Unit (BCIU) was formally recognized as the 2026 recipient of the Reading Area Community College (RACC) President’s Award during RACC’s Commencement ceremony on Friday, May 8, 2026. The award celebrates organizations whose leadership, partnership, and commitment to students strengthen educational opportunity across Berks County, qualities the BCIU has demonstrated for decades.
During the ceremony, RACC President Dr. Susan Looney highlighted the BCIU’s longstanding role as a regional leader in education, noting its impact from early childhood programs to workforce development initiatives. She emphasized the strong partnership between the two institutions, which has expanded pathways for students transitioning from high school to college and careers.
Mr. Jonathan Tinoco, BCIU Board member; Dr. Jill Hackman, BCIU Executive Director; and Dr. Michelle Reichard Huff, RACC Trustee and BCIU Director of the Office of Early Childhood and Student Services, accepted the award on behalf of the BCIU. In her remarks, Dr. Hackman reflected on the significance of the recognition and the shared mission that unites the two organizations. “This award represents what is possible when strong institutions work together with shared purpose,” Dr. Hackman said. “The partnership between the BCIU and RACC is built on a commitment to access, opportunity, and student success, expanding opportunity, removing barriers, and ensuring that every learner can envision—and achieve—a successful future.”
The BCIU’s collaboration with RACC has resulted in meaningful, student-centered initiatives, including dual enrollment opportunities, alignment of career and technical education programs, and workforce pathways that prepare students for high-demand careers in the region. These efforts have created more seamless transitions for students and broadened access to postsecondary education.
Dr. Hackman also expressed gratitude to RACC leadership, including Dr. Looney and RACC Board of Trustees Chair Ed Stock, acknowledging their dedication to strengthening educational outcomes for the community.
“This recognition is especially meaningful because it reflects the collective work of our Board of Directors, our staff, and our school and community partners,” Dr. Hackman noted. “Every day, we work together to support learners across Berks County—and this award affirms the impact of that shared commitment.”
The BCIU extends its appreciation to Reading Area Community College for this honor and looks forward to continued collaboration in the service of students, families, and the broader Berks County community.
