The Berks County Intermediate Unit’s Pre-K Counts and Head Start programs celebrated the Week of the Young Child (WOYC) from April 11–17, 2026. This national initiative, led by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and now in its 55th year, recognizes the importance of early learning and the critical role families and educators play in supporting young children’s development.
At the BCIU, the WOYC highlights the high-quality instruction, strong relationships, and family partnerships that define our early childhood programs throughout the year. Through intentional, developmentally appropriate practices, students engage in meaningful learning that supports language development, problem-solving, and social-emotional growth, building a strong foundation for future success.
Classrooms participated in themed activities throughout the week, including Music Monday, Tasty Tuesday, Work Together Wednesday, Artsy Thursday/Pajama Day, and Family Friday, each reinforcing skills such as independence, cooperation, confidence, and family engagement.
For families, the celebration also strengthened the home-school connection – a core component of the BCIU’s early childhood programs. The week underscored the meaningful work taking place across classrooms and reaffirmed a shared commitment to ensuring every child has access to high-quality learning experiences.
