On March 11, students at the Learning Academy at Thomas Ford recently had the opportunity to explore the meaning of leadership during an interactive Leadership Talk led by Dr. Jill Hackman, Executive Director of the Berks County Intermediate Unit, and Dr. Michelle Reichard-Huff, Director of the Office of Early Childhood and Student Services.
Throughout the session, students were encouraged to think beyond traditional definitions of leadership. Dr. Hackman and Dr. Reichard-Huff emphasized that leadership is not defined by a title, but by everyday actions that positively influence and support others.
Students participated in a hands-on leadership mapping activity, identifying qualities they associate with effective leaders while also recognizing strengths within themselves. The conversation highlighted three key themes aligned with the BCIU’s theme, Service in Action: Aspire, Adapt, and Advance, encouraging students to reflect on the importance of integrity, empathy, resilience, and collaboration.
Through discussion and real-life scenarios, students considered how leaders can support others during challenges and contribute to a positive school community.
The Leadership Talk concluded with each student committing to one action they would take in the coming week to lead through service and make a difference.
This experience reinforced that leadership begins with small, intentional actions – and that every student has the power to make a meaningful impact within their school and community.
