The Berks County Intermediate Unit (BCIU) hosted the 27th Annual Board Presidents’, Superintendents’, and CTC Directors’ Workshop on January 29, 2026, at the BCIU Main Office. This event is an annual tradition that continues to strengthen partnerships and support effective educational governance. The evening offered a meaningful blend of collaboration, professional learning, and forward‑looking dialogue as participants explored the opportunities and challenges shaping today’s educational landscape.
A highlight of the event was the keynote presentation by Dr. Carl Sheperis, Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies at Kutztown University, who delivered a compelling session titled “Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Education.” Dr. Sheperis emphasized that AI is no longer an emerging concept but an active presence in schools, noting that it already appears “on student devices, in homework assignments, grading shortcuts, lesson planning, special education documentation, and the jobs students are preparing for.”
Throughout his presentation, Dr. Sheperis emphasized the importance of understanding what AI is—and what it is not. He explained that AI excels at “pattern recognition at scale” and making predictions, yet it lacks true comprehension and “should not be relied upon as a sole decision‑maker” in sensitive areas of education.
He also highlighted the systemic implications of AI adoption, reminding leaders that the core questions ahead involve determining which decisions AI may influence, which must remain human, and how to teach students to use AI responsibly and transparently.
Dr. Sheperis encouraged schools to take practical, proactive steps, such as forming AI task forces, piloting tools in controlled environments, and developing clear guidance for staff and students. As he noted, “This moment is not about fearing AI, but embracing it with intentionality… The opportunity lies in shaping it to empower students and create more equitable outcomes.”
The BCIU extends its sincere appreciation to Fidevia Construction Management and Consulting and Devopar Consulting for their generous support as event co‑sponsors, and to all participants for their continued commitment to the more than 70,000 students served across Berks County.
