On December 5, 2025, the Berks County Intermediate Unit (BCIU) hosted its third annual Toy Adaptation Day at the BCIU Main Office, bringing together students, educators, and community partners for a hands-on experience with a powerful purpose.
Students from the Exeter Township School District, Fleetwood Area School District, and Penn State Berks FiERCE program worked collaboratively to dismantle, modify, and reassemble battery- and switch-operated toys. These adaptations enhance accessibility for children with disabilities, allowing more students to develop essential motor skills and experience the joy of play.
Students from the BCIU’s Pathways to Adult Living (PAL) program also participated, gaining valuable experience in teamwork, communication, and community engagement. They further supported the event by providing holiday refreshments through the PAL Perks Coffee Cart.
All adapted toys created were tagged and donated to students across Berks County, extending the day's impact well beyond the workshop. The BCIU is grateful for the generous sponsors and partners whose support helps make Toy Adaptation Day possible. Through collaboration and innovation, this event continues to make a meaningful difference for learners throughout Berks County.
