Rebecca Thomas

The Berks County Intermediate Unit is pleased to recognize Rebecca Thomas, Head Start Nutrition and Food Service Specialist, II, as the Employee of the Month for January 2026. Rebecca has been a dedicated member of the BCIU team for six years, her work making a meaningful impact on the health and well-being of the children and families we serve.

Rebecca grew up in Exeter Township, where she still resides today. She holds a bachelor’s degree in science and nursing from West Chester University, a background that strongly supports her work in nutrition, health, and wellness.

Outside of work, Rebecca enjoys spending time with her family, hiking, traveling, and cheering on her three sons, Jacob, Liam, and Mason, at their sporting events. She and her husband, Ryan, also share their home with two dogs, Darby and Dolly. A fun fact you might not know: Rebecca’s oldest son plays Division I soccer at Bucknell University.

When asked about the best part of her job, Rebecca shared that it’s “knowing that the work I do directly supports children’s health and well-being.” That commitment is evident in everything she does. Rebecca’s supervisor, Beth Weckel, Assistant Program Administrator of Family Services for Head Start, highlighted the many ways Rebecca goes above and beyond in her role.

She continually seeks opportunities to streamline services and strengthen partnerships with community organizations. Rebecca stays informed on all aspects of the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP)—even areas beyond her direct responsibilities—and collaborates closely with the health team to meet the nutritional needs, dietary accommodations, and overall health requirements of children in the Head Start and Pre-K Counts programs. Rebecca has also helped develop and refine policies and procedures to deliver consistent, high-quality services across programs.

Known for her reliability, flexibility, and collaborative spirit, Rebecca willingly gives her time—often beyond regular hours—to connect families with health and nutrition resources. She brings creativity and ingenuity to her role, finding ways to provide healthy food experiences despite budget limitations.
