school safety roundtable attendees

On January 13, 2026, the Berks County Intermediate Unit (BCIU) hosted a Safety, Security, and Emergency Management Roundtable, bringing together Berks County superintendents, career and technical center directors, BCIU leadership, and key County safety officials.

Insights were shared by John T. Adams, District Attorney; Brian Gottschall, Director of Emergency Services; Mandy P. Miller, Sheriff; and Matthew Stitzel, Coroner, highlighting current safety and emergency response priorities, emerging trends, and the importance of coordinated protocols between schools and public safety agencies.

Participants emphasized that strong school safety relies on trust and relationships built well before emergencies occur. The discussion also explored ways the BCIU and schools can strengthen partnerships, including improving communication, refining emergency notification systems, and maintaining clear points of contact.

Russell Del Rosario, BCIU Program Administrator for Safety and Security, noted the roundtable’s value: “Our schools and public safety partners share a common goal—keeping Berks County students, staff, and families safe. These discussions allow us to coordinate more effectively, anticipate challenges, and build stronger, safer communities together.”

The BCIU looks forward to continuing these collaborative efforts to support preparedness, responsiveness, and the well-being of Berks County school communities.
