The Berks County Intermediate Unit (BCIU) held its annual Mid-Year State of the Unit on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, providing an opportunity to reconnect, reflect, and align as the organization transitions into the second half of the school year. Centered on the theme “Service in Action: Aspire. Adapt. Advance,” the event reaffirmed the organization’s shared commitment to serving students, families, educators, and communities.
Dr. Jill Hackman, Executive Director, opened the program by thanking staff for their professionalism, dedication, and perseverance, emphasizing that service is demonstrated through daily actions that advance the BCIU’s mission and values. Program updates highlighted initiatives fostering a culture of belonging, the Staying Connected publication, recognition as a Top Workplace based on employee feedback, and upcoming opportunities, including the Spring 2026 Emerging Leaders Program and the annual Employee Engagement Survey.
Organizational accomplishments and priorities were shared through the Office Accomplishments & Priorities publication, illustrating the breadth and impact of work occurring across all offices. Additional updates included recognition of the Board of Directors and the addition of new Board members, leadership team updates, and the launch of the BCIU Education Foundation. The Education Foundation will support long-term investments in educational programming and facilities, with a strategic focus on early childhood education. Staff were also reminded of ongoing Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) efforts and Act 55 Safety and Security training requirements, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to compliance, safety, and shared responsibility.
A key component of the Mid-Year State of the Unit was the Leadership Team Q&A Forum, during which members of the Leadership Team addressed 47 staff-submitted questions across eight areas, including funding stability, facilities, staffing, professional growth, communication, and long-term strategic direction, reinforcing a commitment to transparency, responsiveness, and continued dialogue.
Dr. Hackman concluded by reaffirming that the BCIU’s greatest strength is its people, stating, “Our strength has always been our people—professionals who bring purpose, compassion, and commitment to their work every day.” The program closed with staff and student photo collages, reminding all in attendance that service in action—aspiring, adapting, and advancing together—remains at the heart of the BCIU’s work.
