On October 28 and 29, 2025, Berks County school leaders, alongside Berks County Intermediate Unit (BCIU) officials, visited the State Capitol for the 2025 Berks County Superintendents’ and CTC Directors’ Study Council. This annual event strengthens relationships between local schools and legislators, promotes ongoing advocacy, and provides an opportunity to influence policy decisions that affect students and educators.
Throughout the first day, Berks County school leaders met with Senator Judy Schwank, Senator Scott Martin and the Senate Appropriations team, and Senators Chris Gebhard, Katie Muth, and Tracy Pennycuick to advocate for key priorities, programs, and initiatives that support student success. Leaders addressed the challenges posed by the state budget impasse and explored strategies to protect essential services and supports for students and educators. Legislators gained valuable insight into how policies and legislation impact the lives of children, families, schools, and communities throughout Berks County.
The second day of the Study Council brought together participants with officials from the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE). The discussion highlighted PDE priorities and resources, as well as the innovative programs and achievements taking place across Berks County schools. The Study Council not only reinforces the partnership between Berk County schools and state leaders but also enables educators to advocate effectively for the needs of their students. By sharing their experiences and successes, our school leaders help shape policies that promote high-quality education for all students.
“Engaging directly with our legislators allows us to ensure that the voices of our students and educators are heard,” said Dr. Jill Hackman, BCIU Executive Director. “These conversations are critical in shaping policies that support student learning and success, building a stronger future for education in Berks County.”
