Presenters at PAC-TE Conference

The Berks County Intermediate Unit (BCIU) presented its program, “Building Up Learners, Tearing Down Stereotypes,” at the PAC-TE Conference on October 22, highlighting a growing partnership between The Learning Academy at Thomas Ford and Kutztown University.

Principal Zach Milch and English Teacher Laura Johnston, together with Kutztown University’s Dr. Tabetha Bernstein-Danis and Dr. Tracy Driehaus , shared how the collaboration supports at-risk students through mentorship, experiential learning, and opportunities to connect with future educators. Kutztown students first visited The Learning Academy in spring 2025, with plans to expand the work this fall.

“Our goal is to show that every learner, regardless of background, has the potential to excel when given the right opportunities and belief,” said Zach Milch. “This collaboration with Kutztown University allows our students to see themselves as individuals who can go to college and work in education.”

Now in its second year, the program pairs Thomas Ford students with Kutztown education majors for academic activities, reflective discussions, and team-building experiences designed to build confidence and challenge stereotypes often associated with alternative education.

“Not only is it our goal to give Thomas Ford students tools for success

through this mentorship program, but we also aim to provide Kutztown teacher candidates with a new perspective—one that reveals how meaningful it is to teach students in an alternative setting,” said Laura Johnston.

The presentation sparked strong interest from educators and university faculty, underscoring the importance of partnerships between K-12 and higher education that broaden opportunities, expand access, and support student success.
