Students in green shirts at camp connect

This summer, 23 children from across Berks County participated in Camp Connect, a unique and caring camp experience designed specifically for children who have recently lost a loved one.

To better serve families across Berks County, two free camps were offered: June 16 to 19 in the Temple / Muhlenberg area and August 4 to 7 in the Spring Township / Mohns Hill Area. Each four-day session blended games, art, and fun activities with grief education and emotional support.

Staffed by mental health professionals and trained volunteers, Camp Connect welcomed children ages 6 to 16. Each child was paired with a “buddy,” a volunteer counselor who provided individualized support and encouragement throughout the week. The camp provided a safe and supportive environment where participants could connect with peers who had experienced similar losses, learn healthy ways to express and manage painful emotions, and gain valuable coping strategies.

Highlights from this summer’s camp included visits from certified therapy dogs, free shaved ice from Kona Ice of West Reading, and a special closing event at FirstEnergy Stadium featuring a tour and a meaningful remembrance ceremony.

Camp Connect is offered through the Berks County Intermediate Unit and is supported by a collaborative partnership with the Berks County Mental Health / Developmental Disabilities Program, Jan’s Circle of Friends, local hospice bereavement programs, social agencies, and therapy dogs.
