BCIU staff and volunteers pose for photo

On Saturday, April 26, 2025, the Berks County Intermediate Unit (BCIU) hosted the 51st Annual Berks County Pupil Transportation Association (BCPTA) School Bus Safety Competition at the Main Office building. This annual event brought together school bus drivers from across the County to demonstrate their exceptional skills, professionalism, and commitment to student safety.

Nearly 50 school bus drivers, including 11 from the BCIU, participated in a series of written and driving evaluations that tested their knowledge of safety regulations and procedures, and their ability to navigate a challenging obstacle course designed to simulate real-world driving scenarios.

A highlight of the day was the extremely difficult “$20 Bill Challenge,” where drivers attempt to position a rear tire precisely on a $20 bill, earning the cash if successful. While no one claimed the prize last year, this year saw two winners: Alicia Kachel, BCIU Supervisor of Contracted Transportation Services, and Nitdia Harrison, BCIU CDL Driver and CDL Instructor and Tester. Congratulations to both on this remarkable achievement!

Congratulations to the 2025 top 10 finishers:

1. Wilma Herrera, BCIU

2. Connie Lash, Zum Services, Inc.

3. Chuck Orr, Eshelman Transportation Inc.

4. Pamela Little, Krise Transportation

These outstanding drivers have earned the honor of representing Berks County at the Pennsylvania State School Bus Safety Competition, scheduled for June 20–21 at Bald Eagle High School in Bellefonte.

We congratulate all who participated and wish continued success to the state qualifiers as they advance to compete at the state level!

The competition was coordinated by the BCPTA and supported by volunteers, judges, and local transportation partners, whose efforts ensured a smooth and successful experience for all involved. Thank you to the BCPTA and the BCIU Transportation team for their leadership and coordination in delivering another outstanding and meaningful event.
