On Tuesday, April 22, students at the Learning Academy at Thomas Ford (LATF) participated in an engaging presentation titled “Get Hired: Resume, Application & Interviewing Tips” led by Mary Franciscus, BCIU Director of Human Resources, and Isabel Henao, Assistant Program Administrator, Human Resources. Designed to help students prepare for entering the workforce, the session offered practical guidance on building a strong resume, completing job applications, and approaching interviews with confidence.
The presentation was part of LATF’s ongoing commitment to real-world readiness and community-based learning. “One of our goals at the Learning Academy at Thomas Ford is to have our students learn from guest speakers,” said Zachariah Milch, Program Administrator at LATF. “Having Ms. Franciscus and Ms. Henao take time away from their schedules to support our students was appreciated. It really shows the sense of community throughout the Berks County Intermediate Unit, and I know the students received excellent advisement.”
In addition to practical tips, students were encouraged to reflect on their strengths, interests, and long-term goals. “The presentation was very useful for us, as students who are struggling to find a job or are too scared to get interviewed,” said LATF student Wigdalee Rodriguez. “I love how we got to step out of our shells and really talk about what we want to do in our future and careers. I personally loved them and the presentation.”
Jessica Bailey, LATF Guidance Counselor, noted how the presentation sparked continued engagement. “It was a great presentation, and it led to students asking many great questions—even continuing the conversation after class. There were many takeaways, and I will be incorporating them into future classes for our students.”
Opportunities like this equip students with the knowledge, tools, and confidence they need to take meaningful steps toward a fulfilling career and a successful future.
