BCTC Fall/Winter 2016 Director’s Message
Autumn is in the air and school is back in full swing at the Berks Career and Technology Center. BCTC students and
staff are poised to take on the challenges of another exciting school year.
Last year we had a record number of students compete in state and national Career and Technical Student Organizations competitions winning scholarships, building leadership, and an experience of a lifetime. Our seniors also achieved at the highest level in the history of BCTC on the National Occupational Competency Institute Exam (NOCTI). Seventy-five percent of all seniors scored “Advanced” on the NOCTI Exam. Congratulations to the BCTC staff and students for this phenomenal achievement.
New for 2016-2017 is the addition of the Sports Medicine and Rehabilitative Therapy Program or “SMaRT.” The SMaRT classroom was customized to include a new theory room and weight and endurance training equipment that is found in a sports training and a physical therapy environment.
Mr. Scott Cote is the new instructor. The curriculum prepares students to enter the career fields of sports medicine and physical therapy with excellent employment prospects. We are working with several colleges to develop
articulation agreements for students to continue their education. Interested students should contact their counseling offices and plan to visit BCTC’s East Campus (Oley) Open House on Tuesday, October 18 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The SMaRT program will be team-taught along with the Health-Related Technology Program, instructed by veteran teacher Ms. Mae Endy.
There is also an incredible need for skilled Precision Machinists and Mechatronics technicians in our area. The employment outlook for these career fields is excellent and the need to find qualified workers is critical. Did you know that 25% of the manufacturing workforce in Berks County is age 55 or older and the average annual wage for skilled machinists has increased by $12,000 in recent years? Check out the extremely well-equipped Mechatronics and Precision and Computer- ized Machining Labs at the West Campus (Leesport) Open House on Thursday, October 20 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Look for information this fall introducing a new county-wide manufacturing video contest named, “What’s Cool about Manufacturing?” This contest is sponsored by the Berks County Manufacturers Resource Center, The Berks County Workforce Development Board and the Reading Muhlenberg and the Berks Career and Technology Centers. The aim is to dispel the myths about manufacturing and spur an interest in students entering the largest employment sector in Berks County.
