BCIU Early Intervention services also help families maintain a smooth transition from our Preschool 3-5 Early Intervention Program into a school-age-program.
Families are provided support in understanding this transition process. One of the supports provided to families is a transition meeting held in February for every family with a child who will be eligible to move on to a kindergarten program. This is a brief 15-30 minute meeting with representatives of your home school district and your child’s Early Intervention service provider. This meeting is intended for families to meet their school district representatives and briefly learn about the transition timelines and procedures.
You will receive more information about school-age transition in the mail as your child enters his or her transition year.
A transition meeting is to give you the opportunity to meet staff from your school district, for early intervention staff to provide the school district with information about your child’s needs and services, and to allow the district to share information about their processes related to transition and kindergarten registration.
Some meetings are organized as group information sharing meetings and some are organized as individual meetings. In all cases, no decisions are made about your child’s program during these meetings.
After the transition meetings occur, the school district will begin the individual planning process for your child. You may contact your school district staff at any time regarding your child’s transition planning process. The notices/letters will provide you with samples and additional information related to your child transitioning to a school-age program.
