Behind the Wheel Training

Registration is Temporarily Closed

BCIU is happy to announce that the Behind the Wheel program is beginning to schedule in-person lessons! Instructors will schedule students who had started lessons prior to the COVID-19 closure so they can complete the course.  Then instructors will begin scheduling students who were registered prior to closure but had not yet started. We are not able to reopen registration at this time, but hope to do so in the near future.

BCIU is concerned about the safety of students and staff and has developed Health and Safety Procedures specifically for the Behind the Wheel program. Students will be asked to review, acknowledge, and abide by the procedure before lessons begin. We look forward to offering this service to Berks County students once again! Behind-the-Wheel Driver's Education

The Berks County Intermediate Unit offers behind-the-wheel driver education for students in Berks County.

Behind-the-wheel instruction provides high school students with six (6) hours of training in a BCIU provided-vehicle with an instructor certified by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Training can be taken separately or in conjunction with theory instruction. Students may receive .10 academic credits for successfully completing behind-the-wheel instruction, depending on school district policy.

Instructors will make individual appointments with students for behind-the-wheel training on Saturdays, Sundays, and weekday evenings.

There is no deadline for registering for behind-the-wheel instruction. Registrants will be contacted by the instructor, who arranges the time and day of driving instructions. Names are added to the behind-the-wheel training list as registrations are received.

Did You Know?: Some insurance companies offer a premium discount to drivers who complete behind-the-wheel instruction. Upon completion of the course, students should access their Frontline Education account to print the Certificate of Driver Training. Students should contact their insurance company for more information.
