Substitute Positions in Berks County

The Berks County Intermediate Unit has substitute teacher and substitute paraeducator positions available in many of our program areas, including our early childhood, special education, and alternative education programs. BCIU Early Intervention

Substitute Positions Needed: Teacher, Paraeducator,

Teacher: $20.00/hour | Paraeducator: $14.15/hour

About the Program

The Berks County Intermediate Unit Preschool Early Intervention Program is a public special education service provided to children, 3 to 5, who have a disability and need specially designed instruction. The program currently serves almost 2,000 students in Berks County. The goal of the program is to provide individualized services to help every child meet their educational needs. Services are provided in classrooms throughout the county. Most classrooms are staffed with low student to teacher ratios. A typical classroom will serve less than 11 students with one teacher and one or more paraeducators. The program is in need of teacher and paraeducator substitutes regularly.

Berks County Head Start

Substitute Positions Needed: Teacher, Paraeducator

Teacher: $18.19/hour | Paraeducator: $14.15/hour

About the Program

The Berks County Head Start program serves 695 children, located across 17 sites around the county. Federally funded, it is designed to bring about a greater degree of social competence and to prepare children of low-income families for kindergarten.  Head Start services include: school readiness development, parent engagement, social services, health/nutrition services, mental and behavioral health supports, and supports for children with disabilities. Children, ages 3–5, attend classes approximately 4 hours per day, 4 days per week or 6 hours a day 5 days per week during the school year. Substitutes serve as either teachers or paraeducators, depending upon their education level and experience.

Pre-K Counts

Substitute Positions Needed: Teacher, Paraeducator

Teacher: $20.00/hour | Paraeducator: $14.15/hour

About the Program

The Pre-K Counts Program provides high quality pre-kindergarten opportunities to three- and four-year-olds at no cost to families. Children from age three until the entry age for kindergarten are eligible to apply. PA Pre-K Counts is targeted to children at risk of school failure, either because of income, language (English is not the first language), or special needs issues. Substitutes serve as either teachers or paraeducators, depending upon their education level and experience.

BCIU School-Age Special Education

Substitute Positions Needed:

Specialist,  Educational Interpreter,  Communication Facilitator

Teacher: $20.00/hour 
Paraeducator Specialist: $16.00/hour
Paraeducator Educational Interpreter: $24.00/hour
Paraeducator Communication Facilitator: $19.50/hour

About the Program

The Berks County Intermediate Unit School-Age Special Education program serves a number of students attending various BCIU School Age (ages 5 through 21) classrooms within Berks County. Most of these programs are housed in school district buildings (Autistic Support, Hearing Impaired Support, Life Skills Support, Multiple Disabilities Support) while others are located in the community (Transition House Sites and Project SEARCH.) The program is in need of teachers, specialists, communication facilitators, and educational interpreters on a consistent basis.

BCIU School-Age Alternative Education

Substitute Positions Needed: Teacher, Specialist

Teacher: $20.47/hour 
Specialist: $20.47/hour

About the Program

The Berks County Intermediate Unit School-Age Alternative Education program provides comprehensive educational opportunities for students who may be at risk, or in need of intensive supports that cannot be implemented in a more traditional environment. Students referred to the programs have behavioral health or mental health needs, substance abuse issues, truancy and other behaviors that impact their learning in a traditional setting. The program provides educational supports, counseling and social skills education. The goal of the program is to work to teach students the skills necessary for a successful return to their home school.

The BCIU provides educational programming through the Learning Academy at Alsace, a secondary alternative school program, as well as in programs such as the Reading Hospital, Berks County Jail System, and the Caron Foundation . The programs need substitutes to cover positions as teachers and specialists, who work together to provide educational and social supports to students.
