GPS TECHNOLOGYAfter more than two years of research and trial, the Transportation Department began utilizing global positioning systems (GPS) technology in its fleet during the 2006-2007 school year. All BICU buses and vans are now equipped with cell phones that feature GPS capabilities.
This satellite-enabled functionality gives the Transportation office the ability to use a computer-mapping program to track vehicle location minute by minute with an accuracy of +/- 200 feet. GPS also provides the capability to search and find the address of a driver’s destination and to access directions to that destination. Advantages of this technology include increased student safety, enhanced fleet management, and improved operational efficiency. |
