Transition House Program

Special Education

On-site learning support

Moving on from school to the next stage of life is often a daunting task for adolescents. For students with mild-to-moderate disabilities, successfully transitioning from the familiar environment of high school to employment and independent living presents special challenges. To help local students meet those challenges, the Berks County Intermediate Unit established the Transition House Program.

Improving
communication skills

The program provides hands-on learning opportunities to students who seek competitive employment after their last year of high school and consists of two half-day sessions, 8 a.m.–11 a.m. and 12 p.m.–3 p.m. School districts can make referrals by submitting a Request for School-Age Services and Programs Form to the BCIU. Students are transported to the program according to arrangements made by their school district, which include the use of public transportation when needed, a skill that is emphasized in the program.
