Students participate in the Kahoot “space race” game at the Family Literacy Event.

The BCIU hosted the 7th Annual Nonpublic Schools’ Title I – Family Literacy Event on Thursday, March 7, 2019. This year’s theme was “Reading is Out of this World.” The event which was held after school at the BCIU’s Main Office was attended by 141 students and 80 parents. Children had the opportunity to attend eight different stations during the evening. These stations included: reading to companion dogs, receiving free books, making crafts, playing space-themed literacy and phonics games, taking pictures at a photo booth, star-gazing in an inflatable planetarium, and playing a Kahoot “space race.”

There were 25 Berks Catholic students who volunteered throughout the evening, including two students who dressed up in costumes, an alien and a spaceman! The outer space theme was used to create fun that will encourage children and their families’ love of reading. Students can read the new and used books they received during the event to help prevent “summer slide.”

Thirty-two businesses across Berks County gave donations to make the event a success. The businesses included: Appeeling Fruit, Barnes & Noble, Berks Catholic High School, Berks County Libraries, Body Zone Sports & Wellness Complex, Carvel, Challenger Center, Chick-fil-A, Clover Farms, Crave Café, Dieffenbach’s, Fantasy Skating Center, Fightin’ Phils, Giant Food Stores, Hiester Lanes Bowling, Infinito’s, Pep Boys, R/C Reading Movies 11 & IMAX, Reading Public Museum, Reading Royals, Redner’s, Schell’s Miniature Golf, Sam’s Club, Sheetz, Sweet Ride Ice Cream, Target, Tiera L. Dobry Foundation, Tom Sturgis Pretzels, Unique Pretzels, V&S Sandwich Shop, Works in Wyomissing, and Yogo Crazy.
