BCIU at People First‘Tis the season of giving back! Berks County businesses and non-profits joined together on November 13 to donate their time, resources, and joyful spirits to brighten the day of those less fortunate for the 10th Annual People First event.

Elsayed (Steve) Elmarzouky, owner of Queen City Family Restaurant on Lancaster Avenue in Shillington, closed his establishment to the general public for the 10th year in a row to host People First – an event with a traditional turkey meal with all the trimmings for invited guests who may not otherwise have a hot holiday meal in a warm setting.

Several community members gathered around 9 a.m. to recognize Mr. Elmarzouky’s 10th year of People First and thank him for his continued generosity to our Berks County community. Meals were served from 11 a.m. until 7:30 p.m.

The Berks County Intermediate Unit once again provided transportation and several employees volunteered at the event. Seventy agencies participated in handing out meal invitations to the homeless population throughout the county. Approximately 75 volunteers donated their time throughout the day to help set-up, serve food, and offer a warm smile to those individuals receiving their holiday meal. They successfully served more than 1,500 meals! The Berks County Intermediate Unit is proud to be a part of this wonderful event.
