EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION ADVOCACY IN HARRISBURG

Spring Day on the HillThe PAIU/PSBA Spring Day on the Hill, held on Monday, April 16, was a day for education leaders to visit the Capitol and advocate for our schools and children. Coordinated by the Pennsylvania Association of Intermediate Units (PAIU), in partnership with the Pennsylvania School Boards Association (PSBA), the day provided an opportunity to meet with legislators to share information about the work we are doing and to convey the educational issues that are important to us as legislators make critical policy and funding decisions related to the 2018-2019 budget. During the event, school leaders shared tables in the Rotunda displaying the great work being done, attended joint meetings with legislative leaders, met with local legislators, and participated in a Rotunda Press Conference along with other education leadership associations.

Representing the Berks County Intermediate Unit, Dr. Jill Hackman, Executive Director; Mr. Carl Blessing, Assistant to the Executive Director/CFO; Mrs. Michelle Reichard-Huff, Director of Early Childhood and Student Services; and Mrs. Sara George, Assistant Director of the Office of Early Childhood and Student Services, shared information with our local legislators about the importance of early childhood education and the complex challenges to support the valuable services we provide to this very important population of children ages 3 to 5. BCIU Board members Mrs. Jill Dennin and Dr. David Hemberger were also in attendance. The BCIU team had meetings with Senator David Argall, Senator Judy Schwank and Chief of Staff Bill Evans, Representative Mark Gillen, Representative Ryan Mackenzie, and a representative from Representative Rozzi’s office. Dr. Hackman also attended joint meetings with Representative David Hickernell (with IU 13), and representatives from the offices of House Speaker Mike Turzai and Representative Dave Reed (with IU 3) and Senator Jake Corman (with IU 10).
