CONTINUED ADVOCACY EFFORTS

COLA members gather for a photo with presenters.

The Committee on Legislative Action (COLA) met the morning of Thursday, February 28, 2019, at the BCIU Main Office to hear an overview on the proposed state budget and pending legislative issues from Jay Himes, Executive Director; and Hannah Barrick, Director of Advocacy; both of the PA School Business Officials Association (PASBO). Sandra Miller, Northeast Coordinator, Field Advocacy, PA Schools Work, also attended the meeting to offer resources and tools to aid the group in advocating for adequate funding for our schools.

COLA is comprised of one school board member representative, the superintendent, and the business manager from each of our 18 school districts. The committee meets quarterly to identify, study, and discuss legislative and policy issues regarding public education, and speaks with one voice to advocate for high quality education for all students. The group is co-chaired by Dr. Robert Pleis, Superintendent of Twin Valley School District, and Dr. Jill Hackman, Executive Director of the BCIU.

The next COLA meeting will be held on Thursday, May 9, at the Main Office. Legislators will be invited to attend the meeting to continue dialogue on identified priority issues and ask how we can assist in the efforts of our legislators in support of common goals.
