The Committee on Legislative Action (COLA) held its first meeting of the new school year on Tuesday, September 10, at the BCIU Main Office.
Leaders from the Pennsylvania School Boards Association (PSBA) were on hand to provide updates on legislative priorities and action on the Hill. Mr. Nathan Mains, PSBA CEO, and Mr. John Callahan, PSBA Chief Advocacy Officer, led the discussion. Both commended the Berks County COLA group for their advocacy efforts which have helped to bring attention to education concerns and positive movement to some issues with local legislators.
Mr. Larry Feinberg, regional Advocacy Ambassador for PSBA, spoke about his role to assist the 97 school districts comprised in Section 8. He also shared information about the “Show Them What It Takes Project,” an effort to welcome legislators into schools and allow them to observe first-hand the dedication of faculty and staff to student success. He urged the group to share the good things happening in their schools as part of the PA Public Schools “Success Starts Here” awareness campaign to raise understanding of the value of public education in PA.
In addition, COLA Chair Dr. Robert Pleis reviewed the committee’s efforts from 2018-2019 and led a discussion on priorities for 2019-2020. Those priorities, as determined by the committee, include:State Level
The next meeting for the Committee on Legislative Action will be held on Tuesday, November 12 at 7:30 a.m. Dr. Mark DiRocco, Executive Director from the Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators (PASA), will be the special guest.
