Board Presidents’ and Superintendents’ Workshop

Board Presidents' and Superintendents' Workshop The 19th Annual Board Presidents’ and Superintendents’ Workshop was held on Thursday evening, January 26, 2018, at the BCIU Main Office.

Colin Black, high school senior from the Boyertown Area School District, was on the agenda as the Special Guest to speak before the keynote. Colin was elected as the 2018 Youth Governor of Pennsylvania by Youth and Government (YAG) delegates at the most recent Model Convention in Harrisburg in April 2017. He was one of 700 students from across Pennsylvania, including 100 students from the Boyertown YMCA’s Youth and Government delegation, who traveled to Harrisburg to participate in the Model Convention to simulate the legislative and judicial processes of state government at the Capitol Building.

Colin shared his experiences leading up to his election as the 2018 Youth Governor, how he came about to receive the honor, his experiences at the Model Convention at the Capitol and with Governor Wolf and his staff, and how his role will help him in the future.

After Colin spoke, Keynote Speaker Ron Cowell provided key updates related to education legislation and policy, and told the group about advocacy efforts on behalf of public education. Ron Cowell is President of the Education Policy and Leadership Center (eplc) in Harrisburg. Formerly a member of the PA House of Representatives, PA State Board of Education, and a board member of the PA Higher Education Council, he is an experienced policy leader, frequent speaker, writer, and consultant concerning education policy issues.

In addition to the beneficial information gleaned from the presenters, the evening provided a valuable opportunity for the superintendents and Board presidents to strengthen their partnerships, while also networking with neighboring school districts.

The event was sponsored for the seventh straight year by Fidevia Construction Management and Consulting of Lititz, PA.
