Leaders representing all 18 Berks County school districts were joined by State Senators David Argall and Judy Schwank; and State Representatives Jim Cox, Mark Gillen, and Barry Jozwiak for the annual Legislative Breakfast on December 13.
The Legislative Breakfast provides an opportunity to strengthen the connection between Berks County school districts and their delegates in Harrisburg by providing a forum of open dialog on the key issues currently facing public schools.
Property tax reform, special education funding, and charter / cyber charter school reform were among the key issues discussed. The conversation was led by Dr. Robert Pleis, Superintendent of the Twin Valley School District and co-chairman of the Committee on Legislative Action (COLA), which works throughout the year to identify critical issues to advocate for public schools in Berks County and across the Commonwealth.
The breakfast was followed by a special presentation for superintendents and business managers to discuss the new reporting requirements under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Leading the discussion from PASBO were Assistant Executive Director Mrs. Hannah Barrick, J.D., and Leadership Advisor Jay Himes. The BCIU thanks our presenters and attendees for their participation and continued collaboration.
