PROGRAMS:

CHILD CARE
The Berks County Intermediate Unit Child Care Program serves over 500 children; age 13 months through 12 years. The goal of the program is to meet the needs of the whole child by providing quality care for children in a safe and nurturing learning environment, as well as to serve as a resource for the families. Centers are located in Hamburg, Kutztown, Schuylkill Valley, Muhlenberg, Reading, Mt. Penn, Exeter, and Wernersville.  Programming is available to provide before and after school care for children in grades kindergarten through grade six. Most centers are open from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. throughout the year. All are staffed according to the student to staff ratios required by the Department of Human Services.

EARLY INTERVENTION
The Berks County Intermediate Unit Early Intervention Program is a public special education service provided to children, 3 to 5, who are experiencing a delay in development. The program currently serves over 2,000 students in Berks County. The goal of the program is to provide individualized services to help every child meet their educational needs. Services are provided in classrooms throughout the county.  Most classrooms are staffed with low student to teacher ratios.  A typical classroom will serve less than 11 students with one teacher and two or more paraeducators.

HEAD START
The Berks County Head Start program serves 640 children in 38 classrooms located at 16 sites around the county. Federally funded, it is designed to bring about a greater degree of social competence and to prepare children of low-income families for kindergarten.  Children, ages 3–5, attend classes approximately 4 hours per day, 4 days per week during the school year.

PRE-K COUNTS
The Pre-K Counts Program provides high quality pre-kindergarten opportunities to three- and four-year-olds at no cost to families. Children from age three until the entry age for kindergarten are eligible to apply. PA Pre-K Counts is targeted to children at risk of school failure, either because of income, language (English is not the first language), or special needs issues.
