VIDEOCONFERENCES (POINT TO POINT, MULTIPOINT)

A videoconference is a means of connecting two or more sites using a network and videoconferencing equipment. Participants can see and hear each other as well as share computer content.

Districts use videoconferencing for meetings, trainings, virtual field trips, and discussions with experts on a topic in all curriculum areas. Students can visit zoos, museums, and scientific laboratories without leaving their classroom. Virtual field trips can be tailored to every grade level and curriculum area.

The BCIU's Educational Technology Services (ETS) Department also provides training and support in this field to teachers who wish to bring distance learning into their classroom. Training covers a wide range of topics, from hardware setup to the type of activities best used in a learner-centric environment. Training on access to remote providers also is offered.

Classes presented via videoconferencing allow schools to offer additional courses and to leverage resources across districts.

Web-based VideoConferencing

The ETS Department offers support on desktop videoconferencing accessed via the Internet. Elluminate desktop videoconferencing allows a presenter to show PowerPoint presentations or share his/her desktop. This tool uses microphones for audio, allowing participants to engage in discussion.

In addition, the presenter can use a Web cam so that meeting participants can see him or her. Sessions on the Elluminate platform can be scheduled with moderator support provided, allowing educators to schedule meetings or trainings at convenient times without having to leave their desk. The ETS Department also provides training on Elluminate's uses.
