iNTERNET 2.0/MAGPI

MAGPI (Mid-Atlantic Gigapop in Philadelphia for Internet2) is the connection point for the Internet2 network at the University of Pennsylvania. MAGPI offers videoconferences in all curriculum areas for K-12 and higher education students and institutions. These videoconferences provide content on global initiatives such as clean water and women's rights.

In addition, MAGPI serves as a learning community for teachers in videoconference training and applications. The videoconferences and training are distributed across the Internet2 research network, which is an optical network open to universities, hospitals, museums, libraries, and K-12 schools. This private network provides quality transmission, adding to the feeling of a face-to-face meeting. All schools on the BCIU Wide Area Network (WAN) have connectivity to the Internet2 network through MAGPI.

MAGPI also runs a Fellows program made possible by the Thickman Family Charitable Foundation. The one-year Fellows program allows educators and technology specialists in the K-20 community (public schools, community and four-year colleges, libraries, museums) to work on teams developing distance learning projects and learning communities. Fellows receive training on advanced networks and attend the Internet2 spring member meeting.
